Product Care

HOW TO CARE FOR SPARTINA LINEN

Spartina Handbags are made of heavy woven linen. All of our linen is treated with a stain and water resistant coating. Our recommendation for care is spot cleaning with a cloth just slightly dampened with warm water.

HOW TO CARE FOR SPARTINA NUBUCK

Spartina 449's handbag line utilizes an unfinished, high quality leather called nubuck. It is stronger and more wear-resistant than suede, but requires special care because it is unfinished and can get stained easily if the proper precautions are not taken.

Sealing

Nubuck is popular because it is one of the strongest and most resilient types of leather when properly treated and sealed. Your Spartina 449 bag is not pretreated, but you may consider purchasing a sealant to apply every six months. This offers an additional layer of protection from water, wine or food spills.

Brushing

Because nubuck is made from thousands of short, fiber hairs, its appearance can change if the hairs are flattened or scuffed. Much like having hat hair at the end of the day, you can remedy the flattened appearance of nubuck by brushing it weekly with a nubuck brush, sponge or cloth. This will raise the fibers again and will also remove little crumbs or pieces of dirt that have settled between the hair.

Avoid Water

Never clean nubuck with water as it can easily change the color, create white watermarks or warp and shrink the leather, which will cause permanent damage.

Suds Method

If your nubuck has become heavily soiled you will need to employ other methods to clean it. First, remove as much of the grime or dirt as possible without rubbing it in or spreading it. You can then mix liquid detergent with water until suds form. Apply only the suds to the nubuck to remove the dirt. This process can take a while, but the soap will work to loosen the dirt on the leather.

Oil Stains

Nubuck is particularly susceptible to oil stains, and in some cases, a nubuck brush will work to remove them. For large stains soak up as much the oil as possible to prevent it from bypassing the sealant and penetrating the leather. If it has already stained the leather, you will need to use a nubuck-degreasing product. Once the stain is removed buff the leather with a nubuck brush, sponge or cloth.

HOW TO CARE FOR SPARTINA SUEDE

1.

Your Spartina Suede Handbag has been pretreated in the dying process with a Teflon Coating to protect it from water and liquids. Use a towel to blot any water, dirt or grime from the bag. Be careful not to rub; this will grind the dirt into the surface. Pressing down on the stain with an absorbent towel and then immediately lifting the towel is best, even if the suede is just wet.

2.

Provide daily care of your suede handbag. Gently brush it with a suede brush to remove any dust and dirt particles it may have picked up during the course of the day. Brushing the handbag also restores the nap to its original direction. We recommend purchasing Shoe Gear Suede & Nubuck Cleaning Kit, which can be found at CVS.

3.

Remove spots with a hard rubber eraser. If this doesn't work, you may need to purchase suede cleaner. Follow the specific directions on the cleaner to remove any spots.

4.

Keep the suede handbag dry. Use caution when wearing your purse on a rainy day. If the handbag does get wet, blot the water spots with a soft white cloth or paper towel as soon as possible. Let it air dry the rest of the way, then brush it with the suede brush.

5.

Keep the stuffing your Spartina handbag came with and put it back in to store it when it's not in use. Make sure that it is clean and dry before you put it into storage.

HOW TO CARE FOR SPARTINA LEATHER

Dampen a lint-free cloth with cool water and wipe the leather clean. Start from the top of the leather and wipe — do not rub — while moving downward. Refrain from saturating it; then let air-dry. Buff it with a lint-free cloth dampened with leather cleaner and conditioner.

Keep all leather away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not dry clean leather or use all-purpose cleaners. Store all types of leather in a cool, dry location that has low humidity.

HOW TO CARE FOR SPARTINA JEWELRY

Spartina jewelry is gold plated and therefore requires proper care. Our gold plated jewelry is not designed to wear around-the-clock. So please give it a break from time to time. We recommend that you keep your jewelry dry.

Gold plated jewelry can be damaged by sulfides from perspiration or by chlorine and harsh cleaning solutions. To better protect your jewelry, wrap and store it in a chamois cloth when not in use.

Do not wear your piece while you are swimming, showering or bathing. We also recommend that you do not wear it while you are exercising. Always put your jewelry on after you have applied your make-up, perfumes and lotions. If your jewelry becomes dirty, clean with a soft dry cloth.

Store your jewelry in a soft, lined bag or jewelry box away from the sun or heat. Do not store your jewelry in the bathroom where steam and moisture may affect it.

We use genuine leather in our leather bracelets and therefore some natural color variations may occur. Please protect your leather items from water, and remove them before washing your hands. Leather will tend to stretch over time and is not a defect.
